GEOGRAPHY AND POPULATION COVERED BY THE TEAM
Grampian spans the North East of Scotland and includes 3 local authority areas Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray. Its population is circa 584,000. Aberdeen City is the largest settlement with other major towns including Elgin, Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Inverurie. It has large rural areas, as well as extensive coastlines and mountains. Key local industries include agriculture, maritime and the oil and gas industries.
There is a rising proportion of older people in the North East although Aberdeen City has on average a younger population than both Aberdeenshire and Moray. The North East is relatively affluent compared with many regions of Scotland. Areas of deprivation (using SIMD) are most prevalent in the South and North of Aberdeen City and North Aberdeenshire whilst central, west and south Aberdeenshire are the least deprived. This masks the experience of many people living on a low income in rural communities. Overall life expectancy has stalled.
NHS Grampian is responsible for the planning and delivery of health care services to the population of the North East. Acute specialist services are provided in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) and Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin. There are 3 Health and Social Care Partnerships (HSCPs) providing health and social care services. Our public health workforce is located within NHS Grampian and the three HSCPs.
We have well-established partnership working with Local Authorities and Public Sector partners across the Northeast with many examples of good practice and innovation to protect and improve population health.
