Shetland

GEOGRAPHY AND POPULATION COVERED BY THE TEAM

The population of Shetland is approximately 22,500 and is spread over an island group stretching almost 100 miles north to south miles with 13 inhabited islands.

The Board’s single local hospital (Gilbert Bain Hospital) delivers a comprehensive range of secondary health care services to the local population through a number of local teams providing emergency care, inpatient medical, surgical and maternity services; out-patient and ambulatory care services; child health (including CAMHS); community mental health services, including a Community Mental Health Team, Substance Misuse Recovery Service and Dementia Team. These services are augmented by visiting clinicians providing out patient clinics, surgical interventions and clinical support.

Ten health centres, distributed throughout the islands act as the base for primary and community health care services. There is one independent GP practice and nine practices run by NHS Shetland. There is one co-terminus Local Authority (Shetland Islands Council) and one Integration Joint Board, and one Community Planning Partnership. There are nine residential care homes for older people, all but one run by the Local Authority.
